Descendants of Benjamin Blackburn

Generation No. 1

1.  Benjamin1 Blackburn  He married Mary 1737 in Pennsylvania1.

Notes for Benjamin Blackburn:
From “the Benjamin Blackburn Family” by W.A. Challaconmbe
Tradition says that the family of Benjamin Blackburn was of Scottish-Irish extraction and came to America from Ireland about 1724. Where they landed, where they first settled, the exact time of arrival, and on what ship they came is unknown at this time. Benjamin Blackburn came to America with his parents, his brothers: John, Will, and Samuel, and other relatives. Since the Blackburns were friends and neighbors of the Mathews family in Winchester VA and Dandridge TN, and Mrs Annilu B Odil (1942) says she found a record of one Alexander Mathews in Isle of Wight County, Virginia in 1695, in Deed Book #1and also mentions a John Blackburn in the same county – we are inclined to believe the Blackburns landed in Norfolk, VA about 1724, then moved up to Chester County, Pennsylvania, then to Winchester, VA in 1742.
Tradition also says that Benjamin Blackburn was with Washington’s forces at Braddock’s defeat. This tradition has passed from Nancy Blackburn Carson, a grandaughter of Benjamin Blackburn. Furthermore, this Benjamin is referred to as “General Blackburn” in the “Annuals of the American Pulpit” in a sketch therein of his grandson, the Reverend Gideon Blackburn. It may be that this was a complimentary title bestowed upon him because of his military services against the French and Indians or perhaps the writer of the sketched confused him with his son, the General Samuel Blackburn, who served with distinction in the Revolutionary War. That he was in the conflict is also born out by the record in Vol. III of Hening’s Statutes that he was one of the men from Frederick County, Winchester, VA, who each received 11 pounds and 2 shillings for their services. Mrs Clifford Long, now deceased, of Mt Pleasant TN stated that she was a decendant of Ambrose Blackburn, and that Ambrose and Benjamin were brothers and both were present at Braddock’s Defeat. The writer has never found anything to substantiate this relationship escept the fact that their grandchildren, who lived in Maury County, TN called each other cousin and when in 1855 a number of the family of Ambrose Blackburn moved to Texas they were accompanied by a number of the family of Edward Rose Blackburn, a grandson of Benjamin.
The first authentic date for Benjamin Blackburn is in 1753 when he received a grant from from Lord Fairfax to 181 acres on Mulberry Run in Frederick County, VA.

Benjamin and Mary were probably married in Cester or Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

From  “The Benjamin Blackburn Family” by W.A. Challacombe , pg. 32 : “Benjamin and Mary seemed to have come to Frederick County, Virginia about 1742, then on down to the neighborhood of Steeles’s Tavern in 1770. They lived near Providence Presbyterian Church and were neighbors to the McCormicks (of reaper fame) and the Steele Family. Then in 1784 Benjamin followed his sons John, Robert, and Archibald down into the Wautauga Country where his sons had migrated about 1773.”

“On Feb 5, 1784, Benjamin Blackburn purchased for 150 pounds, 200 acres in Washington County, NC lying on both sides of Onion Branch and the East Branch of Little Limesone Creek. This tract is located about 1 mile south of Washington College, which in that day was conducted by the Rev. Samuel Doak under the name of Martin Academy.

More About Benjamin Blackburn and Mary:
Marriage: 1737, Pennsylvania1

Children of Benjamin Blackburn and Mary are:
2    i.    Benjamin Blackburn2 Jr., born 1738.

Notes for Benjamin Blackburn Jr.:
From “The Benjamin Blackburn Family” By W.A. Challacombe:

Benjamin Blackburn, the eldest son of Benjamin and Mary Blackburn was one of the 150 men from Augusta County, Virginia who served under Colonel Charles Lewis in Dunmore’s Indian War. He served as sergeant in Col. Charles Lewis’ company in the Battle of Point Pleasant, Oct 10, 1774 when the Indians led by the famous Shawnee Chief, Cornstalk, sought to wipe out the Virginian Volunteers before their jucture with Lord Dunmore’s forces. In an all-day battle, one of the greatest battles ever fought between the Indians and their white opponents, the Indians were finally driven back and forced to yeild the field.
In the Annuals of Augusta County (Vol. I, pg 230) we find that “Benjamin Blackburn proved that he was disabled by losing the use of two fingers on his left hand”.
In a pamphlet called “Revolutionary Soldires in Alabama”, Ms Augusta Bradford of Chattanooga, TN found this item:”Benjamin Blackburn, a resident of Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, Private in Lewis’ Regiment; date of enrollment not given, payment to date from April 1, 1810, annual allowance $60.00; sums received $363.90; transferred from Tennessee Sep 14, 1819. Revolutionary Pension Roll, in Vol. 14, Senate Document 514; 23rd Congress, 1st Session, 1833-34

Hening’s Statutes, Volume 13, pg. 616 : ” Benj. Blackbourne, a sergeant in the regiment of riflemen commanded by Capt. Chas. Lewis and disabled by several wounds received at the Battle of Point Pleasant in the year 1774, the sum of 15 pounds.”

11    x.    Samuel Blackburn, born 1759; died 1835.  He married Anne Mathews.

Notes for Samuel Blackburn:
Taken from ” The Benjamin Blackburn Family” by W.A. Challacombe

Born in 1759. He served in the Revolutionary War with the Virginian Forces. He must have served with distinction, as he came out of the war with the title of General and received a grant from the United States of 850 acres in Madison County, OH, apparently for his services.

In 1784 he moved with his father to what is now Washington County, Tennessee where he attended Washington College, which conferred the degree of A.B. upon him in 1785. He moved to Georgia, where he taught for some time at the Academy of Washington, Wilkes County. He married Anne Mathews, daughter of the Georgian Governor, General George Mathews, who served in the Indian Wars and The Revolutionary War.

After his marriage General Samuel Blackburn settled in Elbert County on Broad River, GA.

He was a member of the State Legislature in 1795 which passed the infamous Yazoo Act, which rendered him so unpopular that he left the state and went back to Virginia where he practiced law in Bath County until his death. It is stated that the allegations against the integrity of General Blackburn were founded upon the most trivial circumstances.

General Samuel Blackburn was a classical scholar and one of the most eloquent men of his time. After his return to Bath County, VA he entered actively into the practice of law and the records of Augusta County bear record that he was ‘qualified to practice law on Nov 15, 1796.

He represented Bath County in the Virginia Legislature a number of times and was reputed to have been instrumental in placing the first legal restraint against dueling upon the Statutes of Virginia; the first action of that kind passed in the United States.

He is buried buried at the Episcopalian Cemetery at Staunton, Virginia

Notes for Gideon Blackburn:
Profile of Gideon Blackburn from “The Benjamin Blackburn Family” By W.A. Challacombe:
“Gideon was born August 27, 1772, in Augusta County, Virginia near what is now called Steele’s Tavern and Providence Presbyterian Church. They were neighbors of the Steele and McCormick families (McCormick of reaper fame). When Gideon was about four years old his family moved to Washington County, North Carolina (now Tennessee). It appears the family lived for a time near Bristol, TN, and later on east branch of the Little Limestone Creek and the Nolichucky River. At 12 years of age Gideon went to live with his grandfather, Benjamin Blackburn, who had also moved down from Augusta County, Virginia. While with his grandfather, Gideon attended Martin Academy which had been organized and taught by the Presbyterian minister, Dr. Samuel Doak, under whose tutelage Gideon received the foundation of his knowledge. When his grandfather died about 1790, Gideon and his uncle, Gideon Ritchie, moved to Dandridge, TN. In Dandridge, Gideon was taken into the home of his uncle, John Blackburn, who is spoken of as a man of rare excellence. Gideon continued his studies under Reverend Robert Henderson, pastor of the Hopewell Presbyterian Church at Dandridge, TN. For a time he tended a saw mill at night and studied his Latin verbs by the light of a pine torch. He also did surveying for the early settlers. He slept out in the cane breaks at night to avoid Indians and took his pay in horses.”
“Dr. Silas E Henry writes that in his youth an uncle pointed out to him a ravine near the Blackburn home to which Gideon was wont to retreat for secret prayer. In 1792 Gideon was ordained to the Presbyterian ministry in the Hopewell Presbyterian Church at Dandridge. It is stated that he immediately set out with a company of soldiers who were visiting the forts in the surrounding territory. He accompanied them, preaching to them on the Sabbath and taking part in their campaigns against the hostile Cherokees. It is quite certain that in his youth Gideon had an inclination toward a military career.”
“In his contacts with the Cherokee Indians, he was convinced that the only solution for a permanent and enduring peace with the Indians lay in the leading of them to accept a Christian faith and the ways of the white man’s civilization. Therefore, Gideon appeared before the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church at Philadelphia in 1801 and in an ardent plea for the Indians was appointed by the General Assembly as Missionary to the Cherokees. He set out at once to establish schools among the Cherokees. He taught them not only in spiritual matters but also how to farm their lands with plows and to build roads, his wife instructed the girls in sewing and domestic arts.”
“In 1793, shortly after he was ordained to the ministry, he married his cousin Grizelle Blackburn, daughter of John Blackburn. He made a settlement at Craigs Fort where Maryville is now located. He built 2 log cabins; one for a home, and the other to serve as a school and a church. He became pastor of New Providence and Eusebia Churches, where he served until he moved to central Tennessee in 1810. His labors as pastor of these 2 congregations were interspersed with extensive trips on horseback throughout the settlements in Eastern Tennessee and Northern Alabama organizing churches and preaching to the pioneers that would gather.”
“He moved to Maury County, Tennessee, then to Franklin, Tennessee, where in 1811 he took charge of Harpeth Academy and served as pastor of 5 churches in that vicinity.”
“During his residence at Franklin, TN he made many trips throughout Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri. A record is left of a visit in St Louis in 1816.”
“In 1823 Dr. Gideon Blackburn took charge of the Presbyterian Church at Louisville KY and organized a church and school at Goshen, Kentucky, of which his eldest son, Rev. John N. Blackburn, was in charge until his death in 1838.”
“In 1826, Dr Blackburn became President of Center College for a bout 3 years. The probable reason for his resignation as President of Center College was due to conflict with the Trustees over his views concerning a gradual emancipation of the slaves.”
“In 1828, He took charge of the Presbyterian Church at Versailles, KY and remained there until he moved to Illinois in the fall of 1833. Before he set out for Illinois, he freed his slaves, of whom two came along as hired servants. The bonds of their freedom are on record in the Courthouse at Carlinville, Illinois.”
“In 1834 Gideon Blackburn bought 500 acres on the east side of Carlinville, Illinois.”
“Dr. Blackburn was made a trustee of the Congregational College at Jacksonville, Illinois in 1835 and became a financial agent for the school.”
“Due doubtless to the fact that Illinois College by thei character of 1829 was limited in the amount and kind of Biblical instruction they could give, Dr. Blackburn conceived of a plan to establish a Presbyterian institution of learning at Carlinville.”
“Dr. Blackburn is known chiefly for his eloquence as a pulpit orator. Besides his zeal for Indian missions and ministry to the people of the frontier, he devoted much of his energy to the establishment of Presbyterian churches in Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and the preparation of young men for the service of the Presbyterian ministry. On one occasion he passed by a Negro service and heard a young slave addressing his race. Dr Blackburn was so impressed with his ability that he sought out his master and purchased him and took him into his home and trained him for the ministry, then gave him his freedom and sent him to Philadelphia.”
“Dr. Gideon Blackburn died August 23, 1838. The funeral service was preached by Rev. Dr. Allen of Huntsville, AL.”
“He was buried in Goode Graveyard, now called the Cook Addition of the graveyard, in Carlinville, Illinois. A monument exists at the Carlinville City Cemetary.”
“Dr Blackburn died intestate. His estate was estimated to exceed $45,000. He was probably the wealthiest man in Macoupin County at the time of his death. At the time of this writing (1942) the will was said to be in possession of the heirs of A.M. Blackburn.”
Many of Gideon’s children preceded him in death. “One can sympathize and excuse the aged father in the sufferings of his latter days, if at times he called in question his own acts and thought perhaps the Lord were punishig him. One thing that seemed to rise and trouble him was the question whether he sinned by marrying his own cousin.” This fact came to W.A. Challacombe by two sources that seemed to him to be quite authentic.

I own the Blackburn House in Santa Cruz, which is house built by Judge William Blackburn in 1856, and I am curious about his history. I do believe he opened a saloon on Mission Hill in Santa Cruz, and he sounds like a pretty colorful gentleman; I would like to know more about him. Is he your ancestor?

I’m descended through Jefferson P. Baze, Jr. There are several major errors in the above Baze genealogy and many minor ones too numerous to mention:

“Generation No. 1″ needs to be deleted entirely as it is presently written. It is completely erroneous. We do not know the given name for the father of Abednego Baze (b.ca1783/5, VA), thus we call him “Unknown Baze.” The use of “Abednego Baze, Sr.” is the result of an error early researchers made in confusing the unrelated Boaz family, who had an Abednego Boaz, Sr. & Jr., with our Baze family. (The Revolutionary War service is referring to the unrelated Abednego Boaz, Sr., b.1760.) We only know that Abednego’s father must have died by 1805, because his mother had remarried a David Walker by then.

Abednego’s mother’s name is Hannah. Her maiden name is unknown, thus we call her “Hannah Unknown.” (The Mary Ann Coons given as Abednego’s mother is actually the wife of Abednego’s youngest son, Joseph L. Baze!)

We do not know where in Virginia that Abednego was born. The county given, i.e., Buckingham Co., VA, is where the unrelated Abednego Boaz, Jr (b.1791) was born, and not where our Abednego Baze was born (absent coincidence).

Abednego Baze married Mary Shults (b.ca1790/2, KY or NC->TN) on 20 Jan 1806 in Adair Co., KY. She is the mother of all 14 of the known children of Abednego. Missing from the list of children above are John Baze (b.ca1812, KY), Doctor Peter Baze* (b.1820, TN) and Elizabeth Baze (b.ca1825, TN). The middle name of the daughter named “Sarah” is unknown; and Sarah’s birthyear should be ca1821 instead of ca1825 (the info for Sarah and Elizabeth are being mixed together as presently given). *Note that “Doctor” is a given name and not a medical title here.

Abednego did not have any children by his second wife Sarah Pinkley (b.ca1794, NC), whom he married in 1858.

From his gravestone, we known that Jefferson Peter Baze, Sr. was born 6 Mar 1816 (not 16 Mar 1815, i.e., a double error). And he was definitely born in Tennessee.

His son, Jefferson Peter Baze, Jr., died 10 Jan 1914 (not 01 Oct 1914, again a double error).

Note that Jefferson, Sr. has been identified as a carrier of a cancer-causing genetic mutation. See the Baze GenForum for more info.
